This 1957 John Deere 420W tractor is a row-crop utility variant that is powered by a 1.9L 2-cylinder gasoline engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with a 540-rpm power takeoff. The exterior is finished in green with a yellow stripe across the hood and down the sides of the grille, a paint scheme which was adopted for the second phase of 420 production in 1957. A repaint has been carried out, and closeups of the finish are provided in the photo gallery below. Yellow-painted wheels measure 12×28 out back and 6×16 up front, and a wide adjustable axle is equipped up front. Lights were an option on 420-series tractors and are present front and rear on this example. The operators position features a cushioned bench seat with optional yellow vinyl upholstery and a vertical steering wheel. A new shift knob was installed in 2014. Instrumentation includes a combination speedometer and tachometer, as well as a water temperature gauge and ammeter. The hour meter shows just over 2,900 hours, less than five of which have been accumulated during the tractors time in the current owners collection. The 1.9-liter Johnny Popper 2-cylinder gasoline engine is liquid-cooled with an oil-bath air cleaner. Factory horsepower ratings were 26.2 at the drawbar and 28.3 at the belt. The gearbox offers five forward speeds as well as a reverse, and equipment out back includes a 540-rpm power takeoff and a 3-point hitch. A Dual Touch-O-Matic hydraulic system was standard, and the pump was rebuilt in 2013 along with the brake system. Maintenance in 2019 included replacing the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and ignition coil. The points were also cleaned, and fresh premium fuel was added.
